“theatre, understood to include both dramatic literature and dramatic performance, has long been used as a means of expressing and communicating protests against injustice, exploitation and oppression by those in power, as well as for creating new perceptions of social reality” (Sundar). This statement means that since the early days of theatre, people have always tried to use protesting as an art in order to object against the lack of equality or unfairness between people. As of now and in today’s society, theatre should play a role in being influential, self-expression, social change, and creativity. In the next few sentences, I am going to summarize how each of these components could help to serve the purpose of theatre. First, with self-expression, theatre teaches us how to express ourselves effectively as well as how to communicate with others. Social change gives us the ability to attempt to solve social problems that we may face. I say this because theatre is a place for people to express their “art”. It isn’t strictly based on a specific thing, but can be about anything someone portrays as a piece of art to them. If I could change the course of the theatre in America, I highly doubt that I would try to change anything. The concept of being able to use theatre as a way to protest, especially, is a great thing.
