The visions included God’s universal rule, the restoration and purification of Judah and establishing a new government. In chapter 9 vs 9-12 Zechariah is relaying the message of God’s power and how the Jews can rejoice for there is no hope. God has fought the battle and it is now their time for victory. In chapter 8, the Lord states that he will return to Jerusalem, as it is the faithful city. It depicts a rebuilding a prosperity and peace in the land that had been lost during the destruction. It prophesizes that the Lord will come and show favor to the city and people. Chapter 10 continues the restoration and describes how the people will serve the Lord. The verses before and after the passages of 9:9-12 are detailed in imagery of how the Lord shall rise and protect the Jewish people and remove the evil that has oppressed them. This is a strong passage it seems to be the declaration of victory and a new beginning will soon come. “and his shall command peace to the nations”(9:10) is a prophecy that the Jews had been longing to hear. After being oppressed and exiled and constantly fighting in battles, the thought of peace probably seemed like the impossible was becoming true. “As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit” (9:11). This verse is full of power and promises being kept. The Lord had made a covenant with the people and was coming through with his promise to them. This was a solid way for the Lord that he was going to always keep his covenant and that the people should continue to follow and serve him. The final verse that shows a theme of hope during the time of restoration is, “Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope” (9:12). This is a great verse that helps during restoration. If people don’t have hope, they lose their will. This verse offers hope, which in turn will give them the will to continue on with rebuilding and
