Ellen Grape is a sixteen-year-old girl. Like all the Grape kids she is a brunette. Ellen plays trumpet in the school band and obviously worries about her peers’ perceptions. Had the film been more focused on her character, I suspect it would have been easier to identify her actions as being part of her developmental stage. But, mostly she comes off as a slightly self-centered little brat. Which I suppose is on par with being involved in finding your own identity in difficult circumstances.
