Character vs. self is best represented in the short story, The Lady or the Tiger? by Frank R. Stockton. In the story a princess’s true love was in the arena facing either life or death. At that time, “ she knew behind which door crouched the tiger, and behind which stood the lady.” (3) The princess had to choose between her one true love getting killed by a tiger or allowing him to alive knowing he would be in the other hands of some perfect woman. All day and night the princess thought, “..of her lover opening the door on the other side of which waited the cruel fangs of the tiger! But how much oftener had she seen him at the other door!” (3) The princess had to go against what her own mind that is telling her what the right thing to do is and make a decision.
