These characteristics allow nurses to have an open-minded, caring, and critical thinking brain at all times while caring for and interacting with their patients. Nurse case managers have many of the same characteristics and skills as other registered nurse’s, but they also possess many characteristics that help them to stand out as an individual nurse case manager. Knowledge of general health care and human health is a very important characteristic of a nurse. Nurse’s must be able to apply their knowledge with confidence under any circumstances and must know that their knowledge is backed up by education and research. Critical thinking and clinical judgement are two skills that go hand in hand in a nurses day to day life. Nurses must be able to quickly analyze and evaluate an situation that comes their way, wether it be a minor injury or trauma caused by an accident. Using clinical judgement, a nurse can decide the best treatment plan for a patient very quickly and assure the patient and family that they are confident in their treatment decision. Nurse case managers must have knowledge of all private insurance companies, as well as Medicare and Medicaid; Nurse case managers are often responsible for assisting patients and families with the financial aspect of their care. Along with legal standards that nurses must abide by, there are ethical standards that all nurses, including nurse case managers, must follow. The Code of Ethics for Nurses is set forth by the American Nurses Association and states five basic ethical principles that all nurses must follow. These five ethical principles include: beneficence(“to do good”), non-malfeasance(“to do no harm”), autonomy(respect individuals rights/decisions), and fidelity(follow through and keep promises) (Code of Ethics, 2014).
