Residents in the South Bronx are living at or below the poverty level. See Figure 4. Residents of this community are living in an area with many fast food restaurants, lack of access to healthcare, few parks and unsafe outdoor areas. Although the CDC reports that Childhood obesity is stabilizing, it is vital to address the causes of this health epidemic. Attempts to decrease this epidemic poses a challenge due to the social determinants that propel this preventable public health issue.
