Central norm in every society govern the behavior of their people. In different societies, children are attributed with either economic value or psychological value. Economic value refers to a child physically helping the family and guaranteeing old age treatment of the parents; psychological value attributes friendship, companionship, and generally sources of pleasure with the offspring. Therefore, in developing economies, children are taught obedience rather than autonomy to ensure the purpose of economic value. In most developed Western societies and Japan, children are more viewed as a source of psychological satisfaction.

In many industrialized nations of the developed world, a welfare state has replaced informal and family relationships; members of the society can rely on the state to take care of their survival and well-being.
