Earlier in his life he experienced the effects of the poor laws because he worked in a black-booting factory to provide for his family when his father was imprisoned. The experience later allowed him to reveal what needs to change in England’s society and how it could happen throughout The Christmas Carol.
The main character Scrooge is someone who refuses happiness and charity to anyone around, as his past mistakes in his life had left him cold-hearted. It is revealed that Dickens had the cold hearted character Scrooge portray someone who changed his lifestyle and brought several families together to get through a time of great poverty. Consequently, several characters in the novel represent impoverished people during the 19th century and what generosity of the wealthy could do to them and the town(Gevatheatre). Because Dickens never had someone take care of him as a child, he went his whole life with a feeling of abandonment(Gevatheatre). Dickens used realism in his novel to inspire change in the way that the wealthy treat the impoverished families and children, particularly by making the child Tiny Tim’s life rest in the hands of Scrooge in The Christmas Carol (Bio).
Charles Dickens told in The Christmas Carol a story of a wealthy man named Scrooge, who struggled with greed and want his whole life.
