When men went off to fight in the war from all states it resulted in women taking over numerous male dominated jobs. Some of these jobs included teachers, nurses and factory workers. This impacted the way that American society treated women and it challenged the stereotype of their role in society. After the war there seemed to be decisions regarding the African Americans freedom in the Southern states. Racial prejudice increased as many people in the South blamed the African Americans for the war. Brielle Stonaker and Arica Shepard’s ‘Segregation’ states “There was no need to separate whites and blacks because 95% of blacks were slaves” . This shows the changes that went through American society after the Civil War and slaves were free, after the war laws were put in place to prevent and stop discrimination. American Society was impacted by this change as everyone had to conform to the changing of society’s new beliefs and values. Many were able to recognise black people as people, but racial discrimination was still heavily seen amongst American Society after 1865. Racial segregation seemed to replace slavery when democratic parties regained power in 1877 and ended reconstruction. Reconstitution was needed to restore the Union, to transform the Southern state and the most important part of reconstitution was to secure rights for former slaves. The American Society impacted the way society functioned especially within the Southern states. Society had to alter the way slaves were treated, they didn’t acknowledge them as people and discrimination was an issue. When laws were put in place to reduce discrimination society had to change affecting the opinions and laws of the South. The surrendering of the Confederate army ultimately ending the civil war happened 9th April 1865, this resulted in people on the confederate side to be angered. 5 days after this happened Lincoln was assassinated during a play, this upset majority of the US and affected the politics of America. This impacted society as everyone was mourning the death of the president. “Tens of thousands of Americans lined the railroad route and paid their respects to their fallen leader during the train’s solemn progression through the North.” This shows the impact the death had on society and the effort they put into showing respect for their president. The ‘Radical Republicans’ became less controlled in Lincoln’s death challenging the process of Reconstitution, this affected society especially in the South because power was changing again, the
