North Korea, supported by the Soviet Union, invaded South Korea who was supported by the United States, without warning. President Truman deploys United States troops to South Korea to fight the war, as he promised to help South Korea, “President Harry Truman, with the help of the United Nations, vows to defend democratic South Korea.” (DOC C) Truman did not want to help South Korea because North Korea would crush them otherwise, it was because if North Korea won, communism would have been spread to South Korea. In order to contain communism, Truman had to risk thousands of American lives. However that risk insignificant compared to the risk of communism spreading even more. By fighting the war, the United States was really fighting the spread of communism, which was the purpose of the policy of containment.
