Social Capital is a social concept developed by Coleman in 1990. Social Capital portrays that numerous people within a social structure need to have two traits in common to make it easier for people within that social structure to function.The two main aspects that Coleman identifies are trust and obligation. This solidifies the strength of a community’s social structure creating a social capital, weather it is at a local or public level. An example of local social capital are close family friends. Therefore, crime will prosper because it seems evident that no one is concerned by the state their community is in. This goes the other way around as well; if a community is well maintained, criminal activity will be discouraged. A good example of this theory in action is my neighborhood. When I was younger the neighborhood park, which is at the center of the neighborhood, was nothing but dirt, a dew benches, and a small playground. Around that time the neighborhood was notorious for shooting, theft, and taggings. As the years went by, the city planted grass, replaced the old playgrounds, and even added a baseball field. As the park got these improvements, the neighborhood also got nicer. Crime rates went down and the community became less of a hotspot. Another example, is how a lot of communities have been helped by in Phoenix by a programs called “love your block.” This program brings community members on board with repairing their neighborhood a block at a time. This acronym emphismes on what a selfish or hypocritical person would say when anything constructive towards aiding anyone but them is suggested to be build near them. A phenomenon that is commonly seen in suburban areas. For example, if a homeless man was to be walking around a suburban area, community members will complain and even call the police. Therefore, homeless are usually found in the center of cities or around low income communities. Even though the people that complain consider themselves caring people who would want to be rid of homelessness in their country, they do not want to see them on their nice community golf course, which George Carlin brilliantly suggested could be space for low cost housing. People that live by the NIMBY acronym what homeless to get a job or get help. However you don’t see rehabilitation centers in their communities. You can find those rehab centers far away in a more “ ghetto” area. If it does not look good they do not want it nearby. Another example of this is Tent City in Durango Jail. I find it surprising that no one thought of turning it into a shelter for homeless after it got shut down. However as a detention camp with harsh conditions, it was preserved for years. Just by simply adding some showers and a few details, homeless could have a shelter for the night and a shower that would have made a difference, but instead it was turned into an empty space no one is using.
