Colon cancer has many noticeable signs and symptoms. However, in most cases, the cause of the cancer is unclear of what caused the colon cancer (Mayo clinic). According to Mayoclinic, “Doctors know that colon cancer occurs when healthy cells in the colon develop errors in their genetic blueprint, the DNA.” The cells in their body continue to grow and divided even when their body doesn’t need them. The cells form a tumor as they come together. As these cells grow they destroy the healthy tissues in their body. If they don’t catch cancer it will continue to travel to other parts of their body. In stage 0 the colon cancers have not grown past the inner and only has to have surgery to remove the polyps or through a colonoscope, a flexible fiber-optic instrument inserted through the anus in order to examine the colon (American Cancer Society). Stage I the cancer is just on the colon wall the polyps can be removed through a colonoscopy, and no further treatment is necessary. According to WebMD during a colonoscopy, “The doctor uses a colonoscope, a long, flexible, tubular instrument about 1/2-inch in diameter that transmits an image of the lining of the colon so the doctor can examine it for any abnormalities.” Surgery is needed in Stage II to remove part of the colon that has cancer, followed by chemotherapy. Surgery is also used in Stage III to remove the section of the colon with cancer and any lymph nodes around the section. Adjuvant chemo, used to prevent cancer from recurring, is also used at this stage. Cancer has spread from the colon to other organ and tissues. Surgery doesn’t usually work unless there is small section. Chemotherapy before can allow the tumors to shrink and then surgery might be
