In criminal justice organizations, communication is crucial, whether it be verbal or nonverbal. This can mean the difference between life and death. Within these organizations communication needs to be extremely effective; not only is it important when communicating amongst each other, but also when communicating with criminals, witnesses, suspects, victims, attorneys, and the public. Now when it comes to listening it’s a little more complicated, this is when the sound actually arrives to its final destination which is the brain. The brain is where listening occurs. The act of listening is a deliberate, this is when we try to figure out and make sense of the sound we are hearing. People often make the mistake of thinking that other people even themselves are hard of hearing when in all actuality they are hard of listening. Then there are a large group of people who are able block out sounds and noises sometimes on purpose and sometimes not on purpose, I refer to this as selective hearing.

When it comes to the formal channels, this allows consistency, but has a tendency to limit the free flow of information that helps organizations keep unity. When there are physical barriers, they impede the flow of information. Things such as distance, equipment mal-functions, and language are all specific types of physical barriers. For example, a person speaking Mandarin with very little knowledge of the English language may ask directions and misinterpret the Mandarin directions. Another type of barrier is Emotional, now this can deter the sender or receiver because most people often use their individual experiences when they are communicating with other people. Things such as psychological problems, depression, and low self-esteem are all different types of emotional barriers. Now I will get into semantics barriers which are a whole other type of barrier. This is when two or more people cannot agree on the meaning of certain terms. However, if the receiver doesn’t offer any sort of feedback, the terms can be interpreted differently than the sender planned. One other barrier is when someone isn’t a productive listener. When one is said to be an unproductive listener it means that the receiver fails to comprehend what the sender is communicating.
