In the year 2010 the census of Martin county reached a total population of 146,318 residents (Gray, "Martin County Community Health Assessment Report”). The population has steadily been increasing and is forecasted to grow exponentially in the next few years. The increased population can be attributed to the cost effective living and abundant housing availability. Martin county is known for being a retirement community as well as offering the opportunity for new or young families to find their dream home in the Sailfish Capital of the world. “In 2009, 55% of Martin County’s population was 45 years old and older, as compared to 43% in Florida. Fourteen percent of Martin County’s 2009 population was younger than 15 years of age. The median age in Martin County increased slightly from 47.3 in 2000 to 48.2 in 2009.
