My practical experience was at the Virginia Department of Health (VDH)- Peninsula District. Once I was able to discuss the goals and objectives with the preceptor Kevin Pearce, MPA, we agreed to focus on the emergency preparedness and response objectives, while also experiencing the other departments throughout the District. The goals and objectives agreed to were- to understand current and future risk assessment and their methods, use collaborative methods for achieving organizational and community health goals, appreciate the importance of working collaboratively with diverse communities and constituencies- e.g. researchers, practitioners, agencies and organizations, and obtain an overview of emergency preparedness and response objectives. These goals and objectives are important to the Virginia Department of Health and the community it serves because the ultimate goal is to have a healthy and productive community.

Reviewing this document provided an invaluable experience to understand and familiarize myself with information about radiological materials and how it affects health that the general public is unaware of. The information related to the short-term and long-term monitoring of the environment, the potential threats to food and water supplies, and the public’s health. Also, included in this document are the directives on evaluating the epidemiological response, and steps to reduce morbidity and mortality. These are all the responsibility of the emergency preparedness and response team, which can have serious consequences if procedures are not followed
