Meursault is a character that is all about doing things his way. He’s the type of person that has a routine, and would not think twice about changing said routine. When he's not working, his idea of leisure is either swimming, being with Marie, or going to Celeste’s diner. The diner is a place where he can eat a nice meal and just keep to himself, while Celeste tries to make conversation. One day, he notices a strange woman, and he cannot help but notice how robotic she is. While the robot woman makes two brief appearances, they show the reader Meursault’s observation skills, the similarities and differences between her and Meursault, and the importance of her presence at the trial.

Meursault does what he wants, and does not care what other people say. The robot woman is in the diner, doing what she wants and not paying attention to what people think of her. She is more focused on achieving a goal (calculating her bill, looking at the radio programs). He just goes through the motions, and is not looking for any kind of particular outcome. She symbolizes the mechanical part of Meursault’s personality, (The idea of having a routine). Meursault is somewhat of a robot himself, but the fact that he swims and laughs with Marie proves he does express some emotion. While it seems like her character is pointless, she actually helps Meursault’s character development. As Meursault watches her at the diner, the reader is reminded of his ability to people watch. The robot woman also shows us that she and Meursault are not entirely similar, as they are their own people and have their differences. Finally, while she does not say anything at the trial (or even at the diner), one can see that even the robot woman can blend into the crowd.
