In this lab, we had to compare an egg to a cell. We also tested the effect of hypertonic solutions and hypotonic solutions have on cells.The purpose of this experiment was to observe what happened to a cell when placed in different environments. In order to do this, we used an egg to represent a cell and put it in different solutions such as, vinegar, corn syrup, and distilled water. Corn syrup was used to show how a cell would react in a hypertonic solution, and distilled water was used to show how a cell would react in a hypotonic solution. In addition, a cell’s life depends on cell transport. Osmosis is the diffusion of water, which controls the movement of water in and out of cells. Osmoregulation regulates the water concentration in cells to maintain homeostasis, which is very important for our bodies and living organisms. When cells go through osmosis, their shape will change due to tonicity. Tonicity is the tension in the fluid, which is due to the concentration of dissolved solutes within it. The controlled variables in this lab are the types of cups that were used, because everyone used the same cup type and size. The next controlled variable is the distilled vinegar, the distilled vinegar was a controlled variable because everyone used the same type of brand of vinegar, all of the eggs were also submerged in the distilled white vinegar for approximately 72 hours. The Corn syrup also participated in being a controlled variable. It was a controlled variable because everyone used the same karo brand corn syrup and everyone kept there eggs in the corn syrup for approximately 24 hours. The chicken egg is our next controlled variable because we all got the same type of white chicken egg. Another controlled variable that was seen in this report was the same type of water that was being used for the egg to be submerged in for approximately 24 hours. The Scale to measure the mass of all of the materials used in the experiment was a controlled variable because everyone used the gram measurements.
