However, unlike KFC, which has four outlets around the island, Subway has only three outlets, with only one outlet in St.George’s city, whereas KFC has two outlets in the city. The company was founded on August 28th, 1965 on humble beginnings, just like KFC. In 1965, Fred De Luca borrowed $1,000 USD from his friend Peter Buck to start a restaurant called ‘Pete’s Super Submarines’ in order to pay for medical school. In 1968, the sandwich restaurant was renamed ‘Subway’ and has outlets in 112 countries worldwide today.
Whenever I enter a Subway outlet in Grenada, I am always greeted by the smell of bread baking. Subway specializes in making sandwiches and assures their customers that they bake their bread daily and it is guaranteed fresh. Unlike KFC which has ‘meal deals’, Subway has a strict list of sandwiches and wraps in which you must choose from. Their prices are also higher than KFC; for example, one six inch sandwich would cost you $16 ECD.
Despite the higher prices, you have the assurance that you are always eating healthy. Subway prepares your sandwich in front of you in a systematic process where you choose everything: variety of vegetables, deli meats, cheeses, dressings, and your choice of bread. However, in Grenada, both KFC and Subway have been free from lawsuits and legal complaints from its customers and the state. Unlike the Subway franchise in the USA where the spokesman (Jared Bogle) was arrested for child pornography and the KFC franchise in New York which was sued due to a ‘misleading advertisement’, neither franchise on the island has been involved in a legal hearing.
