It was meant to be taken over the limit and given certain angles that would trick the human eye into focusing on a certain point. Rubens used lots of chiaroscuro throughout this painting with most of the light focusing on Jesus Christ being lifted on the cross in a very weird and almost like a theatrical pose, as well as a very gloomy and dark background in the sky. The women are all at a certain angle, which seems to be completely unnatural and completely unrealistic. The men who are lifting Jesus on the cross have muscles bulging at such an abnormal amount and all seem to be naked except the one only soldier in armor, which is extremely odd. Meanwhile there is dog just hanging out, happy as can be, barking with joy.
