Many forms of literature show the topic of truth. An example of truth in literature is in Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex. In the beginning of the story, truth appears as a goal because Oedipus needs to figure out who killed Laius in order to dispel the plague. The truth reveals itself when Tiresias tells Oedipus “I say that you are the murderer whom you seek” (Sophocles 216). Refusing to believe it, Oedipus decides to continue in the search, and he rejects the truth. Currently, in Flint, Michigan, citizens are facing a water crisis since their tap water has been contaminated by lead. At first, citizens complained about the smell and taste of the new water, but officials told them that the water was safe to drink. Similar to The Lion King, the truth is being masked. According to a video from CNN, officials claimed that the water was safe for 18 months, even though the government tested homes and had seen the abnormal spikes in lead levels but chose to ignore them (Government Accused of). Without exception, the truth was once again revealed, causing not only backlash from the citizens of Flint, but from people and politicians nationwide. As a result of hiding the truth, three major officials have been arrested, which goes to show that hiding the truth will have negative consequences.
