To increase police numbers, the Street Crime Initiative was introduced. The SCI is providing additional resources to provide better policing techniques in areas with high crime rates. The results showed that the areas provided with the SCI decreased in crime rates. Though the results overall showed a decrease, the article furthers on into facts that could have skewed the outcome. The police were free to implement the policy in whichever way they felt was the best as long as it helped fight crime. There 's also the chance that crime rates were transferred over to nearby areas without the SCI where the chance of being caught is lower. Signifying that though it costs more to increase the number of police, it 's less than the cost the crimes create resulting in the beneficial outcome of higher numbers of police. In the last article, it 's established that the certainty is more efficient than the severity. Indicating that when the police numbers expand, the crime rates are likely to lower because the people are more concerned about the fact of getting punished rather than the intensity of the punishment.
