They work fast, hard, and vigorously, accomplishing everything they can, as quickly as they can. Here we are at the beginning of our race, where runners settle into their racing paces. But time takes its toll, and fatigue enters people’s minds. This is the middle of the race, about a mile and a half in. There are weak workers, the ones who allow this fatigue to consume their minds and take a toll on the efficiency and effectiveness of their jobs. These workers are the runners who slow down when their legs feel heavy and their breathing becomes labored. The race’s finish line is in sight. Each ticking second of the clock is slower than the last, just as the body to tightens and burns more and more with every heavy stride leading the runners to the end. These last few minutes typically define whether or not one has had a good day or a bad day. The same holds true for the last few meters of a cross country race. Some people will slack in these last few minutes of the day. ‘No one will notice’ they think to themselves, ‘I can’t get any more work done in these last few minutes, so why should I even try.’ These people would represent the runners who don’t push themselves to the very end. The ones who don’t continue to run as fast as they possibly can through the finish line. Because of this, these runners never achieve the best times that they could, and sometimes these types of runners get surpassed at the very end of the race. And yet there are some who continue to push themselves through those last few grueling seconds. The ones who finish the job. These people are the runners who sprint through the end, who finish strong. The ones who sometimes pass the others.
Everyone runs their own cross country race everyday of their lives. The everyday warm up, the hectic start, exhausting middle, and the choice of finish. When you look at a cross country race this way, the sport doesn’t seem so bad. And if we all can remember that, like in a cross country race, every attitude choice
