In the present-day people still have the belief that the desire for wealth and land were the reason that the Crusaders participated in the Crusades. It is not true because the Crusaders experienced financial ruins because they had to sell their land, borrow many money and spend most of their income to go on a trip to Jerusalem. The Crusaders did not receive any land. Religious belief and the promise of indulgence is what drove the Crusaders to go to reclaim the Holy Land for Christians. The Crusaders would be granted penance for their sins and they see it as a way to have their sins forgiven and enter the kingdom of Heaven. The Crusades has brought on a myth about a Children’s Crusade continue to exist today. The Children’s Crusade was about children marching to the Holy Land in an attempt to fight the Muslims in order to reclaim the Holy Land. The Children’s Crusade is imaginary and it has never really happened. People are having difficulty understanding why the Crusaders who are Christians would engage in fighting and killing the enemies in the Crusades. People in the 21st century are having difficulty in understanding the Crusades because when the Crusaders kill their enemy they are disobeying the Ten Commandment that you shall not kill and the command of Jesus that you should love your neighbor. It is hard for people to believe in the present-day that there was an army of 60,000 Christians who went on the Crusade because in the 21st century, there are no longer Christians armies that exist who kill and murder many people. The Crusaders have continued to be regarded as heroic because even though they have regained the Holy Land for the Christians It is difficult for people to understand that the Crusades happened in the Jerusalem and the importance of gaining access to the holy places. Jerusalem continues to exist as a center of Christian pilgrimage in the 21st century. Pilgrimage is very important to Christians as it was during the Crusades.
