a). What do sociologists understand by the following terms:
i). Social norms are society’s expectations on how people should and should not act, it is an expectation or guideline of behaviour. Social norms differ depending on your surroundings. ii). Values are ideas or beliefs shared by members of the same culture. These values could be freedom of speech or the right to vote. iii). Socialisation is the process of learning to be a participating member of society. This controls behaviour, brings conformity to norms and installs values across society. As mentioned in item A children must go through the process of socialisation to conform to society. Learning values, norms and beliefs. iv). Culture is the beliefs, behaviour or other characteristics of a society or group. Through culture people define themselves to their shared society values.
b) Social norms can differ between two societies, such as the norm of drinking alcohol. Mormons don’t not believe in drinking alcohol, it is considered a sin. Most other societies consider drinking a social norm, especially the younger generation. It’s a norm to drink with your friends, whereas Mormons would frown upon this.
C) Values can differ between two societies, such as education. In Britain, we have a strong value for a children to stay in education till age 18 possibly longer to become successful in life. This includes both genders. A society different to this is the travelling
