It took place In September of 1944. The plan was to send in airborne and ground troops into the Netherlands and Germany to capture the Axes bridges. It is considered the largest Allied airborne operation of the war. The Allies wanted to create a route into Germany so they could advance their forces faster. This area was so important because it really was the center of Germany’s industrial area. One of the major issues for the Allies during this attack was that they were moving too fast and their supplies were not able to make it to them in time. Also some of the landings by the British were too far from the Arnhem bridges. This helped the Germans prepare for the attacks. The total number of British troops that were a part of the operation was around 10,000 and out of that 1,400 were killed. The shocking number is the 6,000 or more who were taken prisoner . It was a meeting of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. After seeing that the war against Germany was coming to a close these three Allied powers came together to discuss the next steps in ending the war. They decided that they would demand Germany’s unconditional surrender. This was just the first step to the plans for a post-war world. A big discussion was what to do with the conquered country after the war and the citizens that lived there. They chose to split the nation up in four zones. They each would be occupied and ruled by one of the three countries and France. There was some controversy over if France should rule an area because they surrendered to the Germans six weeks into the war. Yet since they were a contributor and continued to have a resistance they were give a section of the divided country in this agreement. There was also some other agreements that made Stalin like to permit free elections in Eastern Europe and to enter the Asian war against Japan. Most of these agreements were kept a secret, they were later were leaked. This was a huge part of what would happen after the war and what the Allies should do with a defeated Germany.
