Daniel was very loyal even at his own discomfort. The early chapters describe how he was put into a training program by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and offered the best training in math, political sciences, astronomy, and languages that was offered to the brightest of the land. This was a three year training program. Daniel and his friends feared that if they ate the foods offered from the king's table it may be disobeying to what the Law covenant allowed a faithful Jew to eat. So he and his friends asked if they could only have plain vegetables and water. This meant no wine, no meat, or other delicacies available. Although the chief was skeptically to let them do this, he decided to let Daniel and his friends eat this way for 10 days. These men were rewarded by God with learning skills, wisdom and Daniel could now understand all visions and dreams. After the 10 days, the four including Daniel, who only ate vegetables and drank water were presented to the king.
