Here he is discussing the absurdity that some naturalists believe species were independently created. Although he does not try to attack Christianity or religion as a whole, he inadvertently does. This is because the main religions in the world (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam) believe that God created everything in the world separately and humans in his image. Therefore, to believe that species evolve throughout time contradicts what religion preaches and that all species were created separately. Darwin continues, “It makes the work of God a mere mockery and deception; I would almost as soon believe with the old and ignorant cosmogonists, that fossil shells had never lived, but had been created in stone so as to mock the shells now living on the sea-shore.” (pg. 167, paragraph 2) Here, Darwin is basically saying that species are created independently and to reject his idea would be mocking God and his handy work. Therefore, people believing in a religion that preaches separatism and creationism now must contest this new theory that Darwin states if they did so they would be demeaning the very God they
