Cosmopolitan is derived from the Greek: “Cosmos” meaning the world or universe and “polites” meaning citizen (Milatovic, 2015). The most common understanding of cosmopolitanism is the “idea that all human beings, regardless of their political affiliation, are (or can and should be) citizens in a single community” (Kleingeld & Brown, 2002). There are a variety of outlooks on cosmopolitanism that relate to politics, culture, moral standards and interactions, however in a general overview, Cosmopolitanism refers to the philosophy that all human beings belong to single community.

When I consider Jonathan Corpus Ong notion of cosmopolitanism I find myself relating to all of the categories of his continuum. The closed category particularly resonates with today society and even though this modern world is trying, there are still issues resolving around segregation of certain cultures and races of people with many being reluctant to change and being accepting of others that are different from them. The instrumental category particularly I find that many people are very self involved and are focussed on themselves rather than those around us but then in certain situations you see these self focused people transfer to the banal stage of the continuum and find a way to engage with others and be involved in a accommodating environment.
