Dietary supplements have been on the market for many years now, and each year “the FDA has tried to warn consumers against dangerous products by updating its list of “tainted” weight-loss supplements, meaning it has identified hidden active ingredients, and the Federal Trade Commission looks for misleading and false advertising” (Yaasmeen). Yaasmeen explains that dietary supplements should have labels that list each of the ingredients that product contains as well as a nutritional fact label. He also goes into detail saying that these labels are not always correct, as well as the nutritional facts that are on these bottles. There is information that is missing from the labels or there is misleading information that these products supposedly do to help aid in weight loss. In the past few years, “the FDA has gone after more than 70 tainted weight loss products, many with names like Slim Burn, 24 Hours Diet, and Natural Model, after finding that they had been adulterated with undeclared stimulants, diuretics, and antidepressants, often in amounts exceeding the maximum recommended dosages at which such drugs can be prescribed” (Trebilcock). With so much research done, “I don’t think diet pills should be taken, I believe you can get all of the benefits from just eating the right foods in the right amounts” (Nissen). Nissen explains an alternative of losing weight and talks about how much healthier it is to lose the weight naturally. According to Yaasmeen, “diet pills should not be legal because most diet pills haven’t been approved for safe weight loss by the Food and Drug Administration, and products often make unsubstantiated scientific claims” (Yaasmeen). Yaasmeen claims that dietary supplements consist of ingredients that are banned but then come back, so they should be banned from the market for good. These dietary supplements do not offer much of an effective weight loss benefit, but have more of an effect on harming the body. These authors agree that dietary supplements should be banned due to the issues that surround them. Both of these authors claim that many dietary supplements are ineffective and are potentially unsafe. When Americans take dietary supplements, they should know that “there are potential health risks associated with using such products” (Whisenhunt). In Nissen’s eyes, “there is no dietary supplement or drug that I know of, that is safe and effective long term” (Nissen). As a result, these authors are saying that Americans should stay away from dietary supplements.
