They could never be freed people, they were always “halfway between slavery and freedom.” Slavery was a major aspect in the Greco-Roman civilizations, the other civilizations used very little slaves or just relied heavily on peasants. Slaves made up most of the populations in Rome,Roman slavery didn’t stem to a single race of people but a big group Egyptian,Syrian,Jews,Greeks,Gauls,North Africans, and others. Free citizens had many few slaves the wealthy had many, other civilizations it was rare to have a slave. The roman economy started to rely on slavery.
