The Church of England wanted religious uniformity, and not everyone wanted that. Puritans wanted to purify the church, and a group of people called Separatists wanted to form their own separate church (OI). Therefore, King James, who wanted those who didn 't agree with the way the church worked to leave, allowed the Separatists to settle and form their own church elsewhere. This formed another settlement in the New England region, this one was Plymouth, Massachusetts (OI). The Separatists moved their families here, and the majority of the population was consisted of families unlike Chesapeake, which was full of single men (Documents B&C). The harsh conditions made it nearly impossible for them to plant crops, or stay warm. The cold was so bitter, and the lack of food made life so difficult for everyone in the regions (Document F). Both regions lost more than half of their population from these unbearable conditions (Document F). The regions that had chosen were unfit to settle. The water wasn 't safe to drink along the James River, because it was either too salty, or too dirty to intake (OI). Without the help of the Native Americans the people fondue Chesapeake region wouldn 't have learned how to plant crops, and eventually plant tobacco so they could finally have money to support themselves. The Pilgrims in the New England region had received aide from the Native American tribes surrounding them as well. The Wampanoags helped the Englishmen fish, plant crops, and maintained peace between the two for 54 years (OI). The Pilgrims celebrated the First Thanksgiving after their first bountiful harvest (OI). Peace with the Natives was a must for survival, and without it both regions would have failed
