No two individuals will sound the same, we all have subtle differences in the way we sound and how we speak which is unique to ourselves. Many differences in our language occur for many reasons such colonisation, immigration or invasion and can affect the dialect or accent that someone may have.
Dialect
The main question that is asked often is: What is a dialect and how does this affect the way in which language can vary. Dialect is an umbrella term used for a variety of linguistics features one of which is an Accent. A dialect is a feature of speech which varies across England and is dependent on where an individual has resided their whole lives or may have moved to over the years. This can be produced in three distinct categories inner. Outer and expanding. Each circle represents where language has spread and the diversities of different cultures. The inner circle is described by Jenkins (2003:15-17) as being norm producing, this can be interpreted as being countries who originally had English as their first language. This can therefore provide a standard of English that other countries can follow.
Conclusion
From looking at dialects and accents it can show that language can vary in many ways across the United Kingdom and across the globe. Factors such as the globalisation of the English language, historical events such as invasions and migration are predominant reasons as to why English varies widely. It has also shown how dialects can differ depending on where an individual is from. Also, an individual can change their accents depending on the social situation they are in for instance the use of a formal, eloquent accent when addressing the queen compared to talking to friends at
