When it comes to driving; we all like to view ourselves as good drivers, however, we’ve become too comfortable with our skills and started taking for granted the basic rules of the road. Distracted driving can not only harm or kill a driver, it can also harm and or kill loved ones who are riding with the driver; plus other driver’s and their loved ones, also unsuspecting pedestrians. Let’s take a closer look at what distracted driving is, how it affects others also, what can be done to avoid such careless driving.

It can range from obvious distractions such as daydreaming, crying or fighting kids in the back seat, to eating lunch behind the wheel. Any task which takes the attention away from the road is considered a distraction. Even if one’s eyes are focused on the road while eating or drinking, shifting food from hand to hand, looking down when one spill, or burning one’s own self on a hot cup of coffee could all take the attention away from the road just long enough to cause an accident.
The list of driving distracted examples could go on and on. Some people even take it as far as shaving or applying makeup while driving. While it is impossible to outlaw all distracted driving, however, other states have created laws against the biggest offenders such as cell phone usage and driving under the influence. Some of the effects can span a lifetime, for example: a life can never be replaced, nevertheless, the family who experiences a lost due to distracted driving; now must live with this tragedy forever. Others can be affected by their home state through the law. Lawmakers can implement new, stricter laws on distracted driving, thus; giving law enforcement another reason to make driving difficult. Insurance companies can raise their rates due to the rise of accidents that happens in an area, hence, the area will then be classified as a high-risk area; forcing people to either change insurance companies for better rates or changing premiums. Either way, unfortunately, people in this area will be affected financially.
Here are some helpful ways to avoid getting caught up with distracted driving. There’s no problem with doing some planning ahead before getting on the road. Do all personal grooming before driving. A vehicle is not the place to put on makeup and shave. Adjust seats, mirrors, climate controls, and music before driving. If children or pets need your help, simply pull over safely and help them. Eating before or after trips or while parked are better options versus eating & drinking while driving. Taking some of these simple precautions can make all difference in getting to point B
