From the early fourteenth century to the end of the sixteenth century, the Italian Renaissance transformed art and brought about countless masterpieces in Italy. It can be seen in writings, sculptures, paintings, architecture, so on the new ideas that were transforming art. From artists such as Fra Angelico to sculptures like Donatello, this movement not only gave us beautiful pieces to admire today, but also rebirthed the entire art movement at this time.
If we start with the architecture at this time, we find ourselves studying individuals such as Brunelleschi. Two important pieces of architecture that both show the changing idea of this time are the Dome of the Florence Cathedral and the Pazzi chapel. The dome of the Florence Cathedral, created by Filippo Brunelleschi, was created between the years of 1420 and 1436. Its shape is an octagon, with a herringbone that is 300 ft. high and spans 130 ft. Originally, this Cathedral did not have a dome because architectures of the previous times believed that it was just too vast an opening. Cimabue painted Enthroned Madonna between 1280 and 1290. In this particular painting, we can see Cimabue attempting to break from classical styles as he attempts to create paintings that are realistic. The throne on which Madonna is placed has a curve, which Cimabue used in an endeavor to create special depth. When looking at the figures, it seems Cimabue also made the clothing more realistic as viewers are able to grasp a better idea of the bodies since the fabrics flow in a more convincing manner. Although his attempt was bold and impressive, Cimabue struggled with creating a complete idea of special depth, as did most artists of this time.
