For the Dominican Republic, we, as in the United States are their most essential trading partner. Much of the Dominican Republic investments stems from U.S. firms of manufactures of apparel and footwear. Knit apparel is one of the critical imports from the Republic to the states. Therefore, the country remains as a vital partner to the states because of its proximity and its large economy. For China, they are known as the third largest market for U.S. exports. Labor intensive goods imported from China have assisted in obtaining lower living costs in the states and American manufactures have found ease in the Chinese marketplace as a haven from economic downfall. As a broader sense, China, Mexican, and India are ranked top fifteen in the total trade with the United States. Mexico and China are ranked in the top fifteen for the greatest percent of exports. China, Mexico, India, and Vietnam are ranked in the top fifteen for the countries with the most imports into the states. The Dominican Republic and Guatemala fall in the top fifteen ranking for surpluses and China, Mexico, Vietnam, Italy, and Indonesia are in there for deficits with the United States. As a consumer, I am connected to the workers in the marketing industry because I am wearing their masterpiece. These workers are working in rough conditions and pushing themselves to create items sufficient enough for us, in the states to be able to wear. One of my favorite clothing items I own is a jacket from Victoria Secret. It is made out of cotton and has a soft warm inside with the overall color being navy and a design on the back written in jewels. For this jacket to make it to my closet it had to travel from Indonesia, almost 10,311 miles. Two issues that could arise by placing a limit on how far a clothing item can be shipped and sold are it stops diversity in culture in a country and the manufacturing location can lose profit. For example, a majority of these peripheral and semi peripheral countries depend on core regions for income based off their raw materials. If a limit was put on the distance an item can travel, some countries may fall deeper into poverty. Allowing clothing items from all over the world allows for diversity throughout the consumer country. A benefit from the customer side of placing a limit would be the shipping costs would be cheaper because they would have no other choice but to purchase items from countries closer in distance. For countries who produce similar items as another country, the country closer to the consumer can benefit from an embargo issued. There will be an increase in demand from these countries items since trade was banned from the further
