The concept in focus for this theory analysis is Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory (SCDNT). It was formulated in the 1980’s based on Orem’s lengthy nursing experiences. Through her career she found that there was a dire need for standardization in the profession to improve nursing conditions for patients. The major concepts developed by Orem that apply to the self-care deficit nursing theory are: 1) self-care theory, theory of dependent care, 3) theory of self-care deficit. The fourth idea of theory of nursing systems was added at a later time. Each of the concepts is broken down further into sorted ideas while retaining the same objectives for this general theory. The purpose of the SCDNT was to formalize nursing practices …show more content…

Literature is structurally consistent with one another. The vocabulary is considered appropriate, at a minimum, for college-educated individuals. The compartmentalized structure of this theory poises the greatest misunderstanding for a lay scholar in nursing theories and practice. Even with my nursing training, I still felt that Orem’s literature was difficult to decipher at times. Author Alligood provides lucid definitions to the many terms that Orem originated such as self-care, self-care deficits and self-care requisites. There are other terms that Orem has changed from common understanding to make them adaptable to her concept. She has revised her original publication multiple times to stay current with nursing practices. The SCDNT has had great influence on the profession. Orem is quoted as saying “Empirical evidence that has developed to theoretical knowledge.” (Alligood, p. 247). By empowering nurses to understand theories such as the self-care deficit, they are able to apply and see the immediate effects through their own eyes. New ideas of research come as a result of daily use of her theory. The motivation for developing this theory was to differentiate nursing models from medical model. The medical model is known to The continued growth of these concepts are supported by the efforts of the International Orem Society, fashioned by Orem herself along with a panel of nursing professionals. The Self-Care, Dependent-Care and Nursing journal is produced based on the foundation of nursing science concentrating on connecting nursing theory with education, practice and research (Berbiglia, et al., 2014). Although she passed at age 92 in 2007, this panel of professionals continue to educate on the application of to everyday practice, as well as scout out research based on it’s application. The IOS journal continued its presence in the nursing profession internationally by holding educational seminars and conferences. Just last year, it was held in Thailand. As a result of Orem, her foundational
