The time period after World War II there was a creation in a new world order. Majority of the world was coming out of colonization and becoming an independent nation. The world was also splitting between the global north, countries that were wealthy and powerful and the global south, countries coming out of colonization and relatively impoverished. While the global south was setting the foundations, such as political policies and economy, the Cold War was beginning. Neo-colonialism occurred during this time period, which forced developing nations to follow a democratic or communist approach towards their policies. The northern countries did not like this module because the products they made were not being sold in the global south. During this time period a major focus was to use government funds for social programs, such as education. Education was a great investment because a country is able to progress better with majority of the population being educated. In 1948, the United States came up with the Marshall Plan, which would help economies in European countries recover after World War II. The significance of the Marshall Plan was that it forced European countries to follow the type of economy the United States had and therefore strengthened the United States economy. The countries that dictated the developing nations economy are not necessarily the country that once colonized them. The countries that usually became neo-colonized were the most powerful countries such as the United States or the Soviet Union. In having a democratic or communist country controlling a developing nation determined what type of economy and political policies were put in place. Since neo-colonialism occurred during the Cold War, the global north used the global south as a means to combat one another. For example in Vietnam where the United States originally had claim but would eventually go to war against the Soviet Union on what kind of policies would take hold.
