For most humans it is necessary to seek enlightenment. The quest for some to seek enlightenment may not be a easy road to travel. Gratification as well as disappointment may very well arise.
It is my belief that the type of enlightenment Plato wants us to seek is true knowledge. Despite the trials and tribulations we may face, when in search of this enlightenment, we must take solace in knowing that “with knowledge comes great power “. Martin Luther King Jr. is asking humanity to strive for is the human right of true freedom. In Dr. Martin Luther Kings “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”, this is proven to me by the quote “We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed”. When we are on a quest to ensure that our generation and future generations have equal rights thus having true freedom, we must keep in mind that we may be met with opposition of all sorts. However, it is necessary to stand up in the face of oppression to attain our God given rights. Although we may be met with many roadblocks on this quest such as violence or legal action, we must know that if these things come to pass it will serve a greater good. The change must begin somewhere, we cannot be fearful or else we will remain oppressed. Day in and day out we would tease her about her hijab. As children we were unaware of the hurt this could cause. On this particular day we were all in the cafeteria eating lunch, sitting across the table from me and my friends sat the Muslim girl. My friend or so I thought, whispered in my ear “Jakirah lets pull off that Muslim girl’s hijab”. I don’t know why but a feeling came over me that was different from all of the other numerous acts of harassment that took place before. I thought to myself no one deserved to be treated the way we treated her, after all she was no different than any one of us. I turned to my friend at the time and shouted No! I am not going to do it and I will not allow you to do it. She gave me a look of shock and disgust then she called me a chicken. I immediately got up from beside her and simply told her I’m done. I went over to the Muslim girl and told her how sorry I was for the way we treated her. It was on that day, I knew right then and there I had just lost my so-called friends and later I would become one of their new targets. However, I had gained a new friend, she was no longer the Muslim girl she had a name, Miriam. Despite the turmoil I had put her through she found it in her heart to forgive me.
