The painting was made by a Spanish painter called Modesto Broncos in 1895. In his work, three generations of the same family are portrayed. The Grandmother (black) is standing on the left looking like she is praying to God. The mother (brown) sitting right next to the grandmother and holding the baby (phenotypically white). The grandmother is raising her hands to the heavens in a gesture for “redemption”: the birth of the white grandson, who will be spared the hardships and memories of the slave-owning past. The Argentine intellectual- and later president- Doming Faustino Sarmiento said “the objective of any government should be to lead the nation from the barbarity into the nineteenth century, into the civilization exemplified by Europe.” Sarmiento was trying to Europeanize Latin America, he thought that Latin America was not advancing towards better infrastructures and communities, it was going backwards. But, with lands this big, there is always problems like what happened with the laborer Chico Mendes, he was gunned down by powerful ranchers in the Amazon Rain Forest on December 22, 1988. He rebelled against his employers, he was aware that workers like him were being exploited all over the country so he decided to take a stand and attempted to unionize his compatriots for better wages and conditions. While he was trying to do this, he also took a stand for the environment, all he was trying to do was save the natural habitat of the Amazon Forest and trying to stop the land ranchers from burning down the forest so they could build stuff and make money from it. Mendes invented a kind of reverse globalization, creating alliances between his grassroots campaign and the global environment movement. A lot of people have died because they tried to do what Mendes was doing, and nobody has said anything about them, but this case was different from the others. Brazilian officers were forced to capture the person that killed Chico Mendes and the powerful person who ordered the killing. This was something that had never happened before, officials would act like it was not their problem and lot of murderers would get away with it.
