Electrolytes consist of ions in a solution; referred to ionic solutions. Life forms require a balance of electrolytes in their cell structures. In humans this balance is regulated by hormones. Disruption of this balance leads to health problems. Electrolytes are useful for electrical batteries and fuel cells. Electrolytes commonly exist as solutions of acids, bases, or salts. Some gases act as electrolytes under conditions of high temperature of low pressure. Solutions are formed when a salt is placed into a solvent such as water. An electrolyte solution may be described as concentrated if it has a high concentration of ions, or dilute if it has a low concentration of ions …show more content…
The purpose is to make clean and healthy drinking water for people or for industrial use. Water purification requires five steps: First, coagulants like lime are added to the water to make it clump together. Second, the water clumps are shaken into larger clumps called flocs. Next, the water has to stand for twenty-four hours which allows the clumps to settle to the bottom. Then, the water is filtered and disinfected with chlorine. Finally, the water goes through aeration which helps remove certain contaminants (How Water
