Advertising consumerism effect Americans in today’s society in many ways. Furthermore, it affects the behavior of Americans as well. If Americans aren 't shopping, then there is no need to advertise. But, since Americans are shopping, the consumption of objects are a need which is why advertising is at an all time high. When there is mass production, it leads to mass marketing, which leads to mass stereotypes, which have individuals group themselves with others, to find meaning together(Twitchell 177). Once an individual is secure in what brand they buy, patterns are created which leads to advertisers losing interest. The purpose to advertise, is to brand consumers and objects(Twitchell 178). So in order to brand consumers, advertisers use a term called positioning. Positioning gives advertising the ability to persuade a group of consumers that an object is one thing, while another group of consumers think otherwise(Twitchell 178). All in all, they are trying to trick consumers into buying their product or brand. If a particular brand demonstrates money, wealth, energy, or self- confidence, then it is more likely for a group of individuals to buy products or services from that brand, because consumers are inspired to purchase service, status, and products that are able to supply character, happiness, and meaning to their identity(Twitchell 179). However instead of Americans worrying about how they should feel and portray themselves, their concentrating on how others look at them.
