There is numerous amount of pressure put on professional and competitive teams because they are all playing for the same goal, to win. Especially, as a job profession coaches have to do well in order to keep their job, therefore they put that pressure on the athletes and push them to win. But how far is too far? When watching any sporting event on television coaches will get kicked out of the game and leaving them with a bad reputation because of bad behavior such as, over excessive yelling, throwing objects, and disagreements with referees. What happens outside of theses games is more significant because coaches will act differently and push athletes over unreasonable limits. This pressure has a mental effect on athletes’ performance and ability to work as a team, which is an essential factor in order to win. There has been a study done that has tested the impact of the coaches coaching style on an athletes’ performance. In this study one hundred and ninety-seven basketball players ranging from ages sixteen to twenty-two filled out a questionnaire on their attitude towards their coaches. In order to truly understand the psychological effects of athletes’ individual performance, it is important take note of the variables, as mentioned; that being, cohesiveness of coaches teaching, psychological effects of post surgery pain and rehabilitation, and diagnosing psychological disorders. As a psychologist, it is extremely important to remember these three points because when evaluating athletes’ mental stability and health, these points must be factored in to make a full and proper patient analyses. Many athletes can become stressed due to intense coaching and they might need to discuss it with someone or a psychologist to resolve tension. Depression from injuries also is a severe factor that causes problems with athletes and this must be dealt with carefully so athletes do not heal with a bad self-image.
