Embryology consists of investigation of the cellular, molecular and structural factors contributing to the formation of an organism. It also provides a logical framework for understanding human anatomy. The fundamental knowledge of embryonic study is important for creating health care strategies for better reproductive outcomes. The expanding understanding on embryology has resulted in new techniques being developed for therapeutic procedures, prenatal diagnoses and treatments to prevent infertility and birth defects, which is the leading cause of infant mortality.
By studying the prenatal stages and mechanism of human development, we are able to understand the normal relationships of adult body structure and the causes of congenital anomalies. It is found in researches that 3 to 4 percent of all live-born children are diagnosed with a significant malformation usually within the first two years after birth.

The uses of human embryonic stem cells have been expanding in clinical studies in recent years. The embryonic stem cells can be isolated from surplus embryos left over after the IVF procedures or from embryos created by somatic cell nuclear transfer.
