Aristotle believed that music had cathartic effects and could provide relief from negative emotions through catharsis. Aristotle believed that creating an ideal environment would help to achieve optimal mental and physical well-being. His theory specifically mentions that song, wine, and women, are the three necessary components to create an optimal environment for man. The idea of music as a healing influence which could affect health and behavior is as least as old as the writings of Aristotle and Plato. Aristotle wrote “Music directly imitates the passions or states of the soul...when one listens to music that imitates a certain passion, he becomes imbued with the same passion; and if over a long time he habitually listens to music that rouses ignoble passions, his whole character will be shaped to an ignoble form.” (Discoveries .2010) I think by this Aristotle knew music had the power to evoke a powerful response in the listeners. As I write this paper I am listening to music, the purpose of which is to help me focus on the task. I love music, I feel it, and some bands like my favorite band Korn speak to me. The songs help me deal with the many issues I’ve encountered growing up, making me feel less alone. Maybe people can forget them pain for a bit, and that’s why music appeals to society. Using music as a therapy may reduce physical, emotional, and mental pain. Many different techniques may be used in music therapy, and it has been known to have a great effect on people.
