We need to have confidence and trust in not only ourselves, but, in our abilities to get control of a crisis situation and bring everyone back down to solid ground where the victims should be.
We are not rescuers that go into this field thinking that we can rescue people. If we have a rescuer attitude, then we tend to have a tendency to become too involved with the client. We are not in this field to fulfill some profound emotional need. We are here to help a crisis victim through whatever deplorable event that they might have experienced. We need to have a capacity for listening. We need to know when to let the client vent and when we should step in and gather information. We also need to recognize when to seek information without intrusion or interfering with the victim’s process.
We need to have awareness of trauma indicators. We need to evaluate how the crisis victim responds to the crisis along with listening to them. Such as how did the victim deal with the crisis? Is there any medical or safety issues that need to be dealt with? We should not approach any intervention with any ideas on how the client should to be responding to the crisis.
