Cultural Diversity is a key component to quality patient centered care. The Nurse needs to be aware of their own cultural attitudes. It is also very import that as nurses we understand the patient’s cultural preferences and needs. Cultural competence is becoming more important because of the increase in cultural diversity in our country. In the United States 13% of our population was not born in this country and another 8-10million are living here without documentation. (Andrews & Boyle, 2016) “transcultural healthcare refers to an evolving body of knowledge and practices regarding health-illness care patterns from a comparative perceptive of at least two or more designated cultures in order to determine the major features and health services of cultures” (Leininger, 2013)

I have taken several diversity trainings and workshops that are offered through my employer to gain more knowledge of awareness of the changes in the evidence-based care of my patients. I use the five-step method that incorporates the nursing method to understand my patient presences and set goal and objectives for their care. We see many different cultures in Labor and Delivery. May cultures have different preference for the birth of their child. I work with my patient and their family to make a plan of care that fits their needs while following hospital guidelines. I take the time to stop and reevaluate our plan of care as needed and make changes with the patient, their family and the entire healthcare team to ensure the patient and team have their needs
