Fetal Alcohol Syndrome can be prevented with education to the mother or any person intending to become pregnant. Changes in lifestyle and behavior can reduce the risk of women giving birth to babies with fetal alcohol syndrome. Signs and symptoms of fetal alcohol syndrome may include any mix of physical defects, intellectual or cognitive disabilities, and problems functioning and coping with daily life. Physical birth defects may include distinctive facial features. Such as a thin upper lip, short upturned nose, wide-set eyes, deformities of joint and limbs, slower physical growth, vision and hearing problems, smaller heart, and heart defects. Brain and central nervous system problems may include, poor coordination or balance, learning disorders, poor memory, attention span problems, and difficulty with problem solving. Social and behavioral issues may include, problems in functioning, coping and interacting with others, poor social skills, and problems in school or every day life
