Today, chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and COPD are the leading causes of mortality morbidity. These chronic diseases can be reduced dramatically through health promotion and disease prevention strategies. In such, health care must be focused on educating the public about exercise, diet, smoking cessation, and stress reduction. The doctor’s focus is on the curing of diseases through medicines and treatment, so the responsibility of health promotion falls upon nursing. Nursing is a profession that focuses on the total well-being of the patient, so it is part of our job function to increase the overall health of the patient through health education. I take this responsibility seriously and during all interactions with patients I assess for education needs for the patient and his family. A detailed assessment of the patient’s health promotion attitudes and knowledge is the basis of my health promotion care education.
