Understanding compliance with protective eyewear amongst peri operative nurses: a phenomenological inquiry.
Personal protection equipment will always be essential in providing safe patient care. Compliance, amongst peri-operative nurses wearing protective eyewear is a topic that can be easily forgotten in this demanding field. Understanding compliance of protective eyewear amongst peri-operative nurses can help employees increase the awareness of possible exposure to bodily fluids during perioperative, intraoperative, and post anesthesia care.

The fact that peri-operative nurses’ may or may not use protective eyewear does not initially mean they wouldn’t use them; it simply meant depending on the circumstance is when the nurses’ felt obligated to wear the protective eyewear. “The findings of this study also support the current literature in that nurses will assess the level of anticipated risks when contemplating the use of protective eyewear, as recommended by the guidelines for PPE”. The Rigour of the study seemed credible but yet not dependable, due to many variables in the study. Upon completing the two literature reviews it dawned on me that qualitative research is aimed towards gathering information on human behavior and reasoning versus observing and gathering statistical information you would achieve for quantitative research. The quantitative research article was based on gather information via observing and compiling weekly questionnaires to build credibility and accurately present the study. The participants were questioned about level of stress, depression, and anxiety prior to the 4-8 weeks sessions to gather data about different therapy that could possible work. The qualitative research article was based on gathering information based on personal experience and prior knowledge about habits. A small sample size was selected to provide the reader with a close to accurate result. Most of the peri-operative nurses expressed different frustration on prior use (human behavior, prior experiences) of protective eyewear. In conclusion qualitative and quantitative studies are require different approaches, as professional nurses we need to make sure we do not take research studies at face
