According to Bowman, “There have been hundreds of research articles that have been published on the use of antidepressants during pregnancy, many producing conflicting information that often leaves the health care provider with doubt as to the correct course of treatment for the provider” (Bowman, 2015). Many birth defects come to role when the women who is pregnant is in labor and the newborn is held in an incubator due to the medication and or treatments taken prior to labor. The author studied the relapse of major depression during pregnancy in women who discontinued their antidepressant treatment. The study of 201 pregnant women compared the risk of relapse in women who discontinued their antidepressant medication to those who maintained treatment with the medications. The purpose of his study was to determine the key sources influencing women who receive or seek out that impact on their decision to either continue or discontinue treatment for anxiety and/or depression during their pregnancy. According to Abc news, “A Tennessee woman is the first to be charged under a new state law that specifically makes it a crime to take drugs while pregnant, calling it "assault"” (Abc News, 2014). Being the first women to be charged with assault should set an example to raise awareness and stop prenatal substances usage during pregnancy. Seeking help by talking to a doctor or family members should be essential to prevent further substance abuse.
There is no expectable reasoning or excuse to taking drugs or alcohol during pregnancy. More women need to be aware of the serious consequences that drugs and alcohol has on themselves but most importantly her unborn child. A mother has the responsibility to take care of herself and be mindful of her health. A fetus cannot say no to the drug but a mother
